Anti-Vortex Plates

Listen Later

This document from RainHarvest Systems outlines specifications and inspection requirements for anti-vortex plate assemblies in rainwater collection systems used for fire protection.

  • NFPA 22 (2013) mandates that every suction tank discharge outlet have an anti-vortex plate assembly.
  • The assembly includes a horizontal steel plate at least twice the outlet diameter on a long radius elbow fitting. This plate is positioned above the tank bottom at a distance equal to half the discharge pipe diameter, with a minimum distance of 6 inches.
  • Larger, standard-sized plates (48 inches x 48 inches) are recommended as they accommodate most pump suction pipe sizes. Smaller plates can be used if they meet the requirements outlined in section 14.2.13.
  • Inspection of the anti-vortex plate is required after tank construction and before filling with water.
  • The inspection should confirm the horizontal steel plate and long radius elbow meet the specifications in section 14.2.13.2 and are installed according to section 14.2.13.3.
  • Inspection results must be included in the written report specified in section 17.1.2.
  • The document also includes illustrations of typical suction nozzles with anti-vortex plates for lap-jointed bolted tanks and flange-jointed bolted steel tanks.
  • The document emphasizes that while it offers a basic reference, it should not be the sole resource for designing or implementing water supply systems for fire protection. Consulting the local fire department for specific requirements and obtaining written specifications is recommended.
