The argument of doctors giving antibiotics for almost every ailment has been in the public space for many years. When one visits a doctor, we hardly ever question the medication they give to us. Well Professor Marc Mendelson, from Groote Schuur Hospital says that the rapid increase in antibiotic-resistant bacteria – in South Africa and across the globe – is driven by the misuse and overuse of antibiotics in humans and food-producing animals and poses a huge threat to modern medicine.
