Blacksmith idiums. That has a nice ring to it.
So with that lets get into it…
Topic-
That has a nice ring to it.
Soundness by impact.
Our meaning today vs. what this means to a blacksmith.
Today meaning- Usually a name, something that actuall sounds good. Maybe an idea, usually a name of a person, business, or product.
When Forging – heat, hammer, repeat.
When forging something – HARD WORK. Pounding steel into a meaningful shape.
Generally 2 types of anvils – cast iron, and hardened steel
Other then the metal type- Two key factors come into play with anvils- weight, and rebound.
More immovable the better. Hit it harder, and use larger hammers. Obvious to tell – weight.
Rebound- trickier.
Soundness is a indicator that the Anvil is of good quality, and ready for work.
A quality Anvil is critical in the forging process of a smith. Rebound test 20in -19in.
Soundness around the face, shelf, horn, etc. Dead spots.
Like Striking while the iron is hot – a quality anvil is critical because your work is MUCH more EFFECTIVE. For the exact same amount of work you get much better results.
A good anvil is about working Smarter, and Harder. – Mike Rowe.
When an Anvil has a nice ring to it, chances are high it has a good rebound.
Good rebound – each blow with the hammer is that much more effective.
Think of bouncing a bowling ball about 3ft off the ground on a hard surface, and on rubber mat. The force of the impact is absorbed the softer the surface. Harder is less.
It is easier to actually swing and hit, and the impact is more effective on a good anvil.
How does a anvil get that good rebound? Hardened steel.
Cast iron has a dull thud to it, and less then half the rebound of hardened steel.
In the creation of the anvil the anvil itself esp. the face is hardened.
So now that you know how to tell a quality anvil from a lousy one what does that have to do with me as a man?
Weight- Actual, and impact.
How heavy are you? Be healthy.
“…for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way…”
1 Timothy 4:8 ESV
Weight of an anvil/men is your impact.
God made men impactful. Some of you are like these 300lb+ anvils that are well anchored, and a joy to do work with. Steady, stable, reliable, stand firm with integrity. You are sound, well seasoned and made of hardened steel. You are like an anchor for all those around you. Keep it up, but don’t get stagnant. Unused anvils get rusty. Well used anvils need occasional reconditioning.
“Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.”
1 Corinthians 10:12 ESV
Some men are like these lighter weight 150lbs or less. Most common weight. Easy to move, and can still do some moderate work with them.
3 usual types in this anvil weight class-
