Peter Taylor is the controller of Purple Innovation, LLC, a/k/a The Purple Mattress Company. He joined the AP Now podcast to discuss how he got his team over their fear of technology, sometimes referred to as Technophobia. We started off by discussing a statistic from a recent AP Now survey which showed 36% of the respondents indicating that one of their major concerns was staff fear over new technology and processes. He was not surprised at all by that number given his recent experiences at Purple.
When one of the two AP processors left Purple, Peter decided to investigate the use of invoice automation instead of replacing the person immediately. To say the first venture into this arena was not successful would be an accurate assessment; the company scrapped the project. But Peter did not give up. He decided to roll up his sleeves and get more involved. Stumbling across a free trial offer from Stampli, he signed up and tested it out himself. When he decided he liked it, he had a staff luncheon, bringing in their favorite foods and then he sold the process to them, walking them through the process of an invoice until they decided that they wanted to use Stampli. He made them part of the decision.
Peter then goes on to discuss some of the other benefits of the implementation, where the team is today with regards to Technophobia and closes with some advice for companies facing similar situations.
