In this episode, Mary Schaeffer, AP Now founder, and podcast host discusses the way crooks are innovating and tweaking existing BEC frauds to take advantage of their targets. She shares three recent cases where the crooks have maneuvered around existing BEC protocols to their advantage. They are using a combination of BEC fraud, with account hijacking and email-in-the middle frauds. When you see how it's done, it is not difficult to protect against it. But the important thing is to take action.

Schaeffer brings home the point of how crooks don’t discriminate and that their frauds are widespread. They will target any and all employees. She thereby makes the argument that it is critical that every employee be educated not only about the frauds but on what to do and equally important, what NOT to do.

She says that “the new normal is verifying everything.” It is unfortunate because verification done correctly takes time and valuable limited human resources. And, it’s not like companies are willingly adding staff to do this. But it is critical.

Finally, because this is being taped right before the holiday, she warns the audience that the Gift Card Scam sometimes referred to as Boss Impersonation Fraud is alive and well. All employees should be updated about this, so no one falls for it.
