Then, we dive into our main subject: a chilling true-crime mystery from right here in Haywood County, not far from where Dillon’s family is from in Maggie Valley. We’re looking back to February 1913 and the dark tale of Nance Dude Kerley—known as Appalachia’s Deadliest Grandma—when a 60-year-old woman and her granddaughter walked into the Western North Carolina woods, but only one returned. Dillon reads through an archival feature from Our State Magazine (February 1994), and we break down the timeline, examine conflicting accounts, and look at how different sources tell the tale.
