Re-imagining Preaching

Appendix 3 – Part 2

Listen Later

Written from a Baptist perspective, this extract from Robert Little’s book (https://theendlessbookcase.com/books/re-imagining-preaching-and-leading-worship/),  outlines the significance of believer’s baptism, contrasting it with infant baptism and adult baptism based solely on age. It argues that baptism should follow conversion and a profession of faith, supported by the commands of Christ, his example and the practices of the early church. The text details the five-fold meaning of baptism for believers: a declaration of union with Christ, a sign of cleansing, a confession of faith, a rite of initiation into the church and a sign of the Holy Spirit’s presence. Finally, it discusses open and closed church membership in Baptist churches, the preferred method of baptism (immersion or affusion) and the ethical implications and lifelong commitment inherent in baptism.
