Christian Prayer:
Morning Prayer for Monday in Holy Week
God, come to my assistance.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
HYMN
According to Thy gracious word,
Thy body, broken for my sake,
PSALMODY
Ant. 1 Jesus said: My heart is nearly broken with sorrow; stay here and keep watch with me.
Psalm 42
Like the deer that yearns
My soul is thirsting for God,
My tears have become my bread,
These things will I remember
Why are you cast down, my soul,
My soul is cast down within me
Deep is calling on deep,
By day the Lord will send
I will say to God, my rock:
With cries that pierce me to the heart,
Why are you cast down, my soul,
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
Psalm-prayer
Father in heaven, when your strength takes possession of us we no longer say: Why are you cast down, my soul? So now that the surging waves of your indignation have passed over us, let us feel the healing calm of your forgiveness. Inspire us to yearn for you always, like the deer for running streams, until you satisfy every longing in heaven.
Ant. Jesus said: My heart is nearly broken with sorrow; stay here and keep watch with me.
Ant. 2 Now the time has come for this world to receive its sentence; now the prince of this world will be driven out.
Canticle – Sirach 36:1-5, 10-13
Come to our aid, O God of the universe,
As you have used us to show them your holiness,
Give new signs and work new wonders;
Gather all the tribes of Jacob,
Take pity on your holy city,
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
Ant. Now the time has come for this world to receive its sentence; now the prince of this world will be driven out.
Ant. 3 Jesus, the beginning and end of our faith, endured the cross, heedless of the shame, and is seated now at the right hand of the throne of God.
Psalm 19A
The heavens proclaim the glory of God,
No speech, no word, no voice is heard
There he has placed a tent for the sun;
At the end of the sky is the rising of the sun;
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
Psalm-prayer
To enlighten the world, Father, you sent to us your Word as the sun of truth and justice shining upon mankind. Illumine our eyes that we may discern your glory in the many works of your hands.
Ant. Jesus, the beginning and end of our faith, endured the cross, heedless of the shame, and is seated now at the right hand of the throne of God.
READING Jeremiah 11:19-20
I, like a trusting lamb led to slaughter, had not realized that they were hatching plots against me: “Let us destroy the tree in its vigor; let us cut him off from the land of the living, so that his name will be spoken no more.”
But, you, O Lord of hosts, O just Judge,
Sacred Silence(indicated by a bell) – a moment to reflect and receive in our hearts the full resonance of the voice of the Holy Spirit and to unite our personal prayer more closely with the word of God and public voice of the Church.
RESPONSORY
By your own blood, Lord, you brought us back to God.
From every tribe, and tongue, and people and nation,
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH
Ant. Father, righteous One, the world does not know you, but I know you, because you are the One who sent me.
Luke 1:68 – 79
Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;
Through his holy prophets he promised of old
This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:
You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High;
In the tender compassion of our God
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
Ant. Father, righteous One, the world does not know you, but I know you, because you are the One who sent me.
INTERCESSIONS
Let us pray to Christ our Savior, who redeemed us by his death and resurrection:
You went up to Jerusalem to suffer and so enter into your glory,
You were lifted high on the cross and pierced by the soldier’s lance,
You made the cross the tree of life,
On the cross you forgave the repentant thief,
Our Father who art in heaven,
Concluding Prayer
Grant,
DISMISSAL
May the Lord bless us,
