Christian Prayer:
Evening Prayer for Tuesday in Holy Week
God, come to my assistance.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
HYMN
Earth's mighty Maker, whose command
That so, with flowers of golden hue,
Our spirit's rankling wounds efface
Let every soul thy law obey,
O Father, that we ask be done,
PSALMODY
Ant. 1 They insulted me and filled me with dread, but the Lord was at my side, like a mighty warrior.
Psalm 49
I
Hear this, all you peoples,
My lips will speak words of wisdom.
Why should I fear in evil days
For no man can buy his own ransom,
He knows that wise men and fools must both perish
In his riches, man lacks wisdom;
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
Ant. They insulted me and filled me with dread, but the Lord was at my side, like a mighty warrior.
Ant. 2 Deliver me, Lord, and place me at your side, then let whoever will, lift his hand to strike me.
II
This is the lot of those who trust in themselves,
With the morning their outward show vanishes
Then do not fear when a man grows rich,
Though he flattered himself while he lived:
In his riches, man lacks wisdom;
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
Psalm-prayer
You condemned the rich, Lord Jesus, because they have already received their reward, and you proclaimed the poor blessed because the kingdom of heaven is theirs. Teach us to seek for imperishable goods and to have confidence in your blood, poured out as the price of our redemption.
Ant. Deliver me, Lord, and place me at your side, then let whoever will, lift his hand to strike me.
Ant. 3 You were slain, Lord, and by your blood you have ransomed us for God.
Canticle β Revelation 4:11; 5:9, 10, 12
O Lord our God, you are worthy
For you have created all things;
Worthy are you, O Lord,
For you were slain;
You made of them a kingdom,
Worthy is the Lamb that was slain
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
Ant. You were slain, Lord, and by your blood you have ransomed us for God.
READING 1 Corinthians 1:27b-30
God singled out the weak of this world to shame the strong. He chose the worldβs lowborn and despised, those who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing those who were something; so that mankind can do no boasting before God. God it is who has given you life in Christ Jesus. He has made him our wisdom and also our justice, our sanctification, and our redemption.
Sacred Silence (indicated by a bell) β a moment to reflect and receive in our hearts the full resonance of the voice of the Holy Spirit and to unite our personal prayer more closely with the word of God and public voice of the Church.
RESPONSORY
We worship you, O Christ, and we praise you.
Because by your cross you have redeemed the world.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
CANTICLE OF MARY
Ant. I have power to lay down my life, and I have power to take it up again.
Luke 1:46-55
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
He has mercy on those who fear him
He has shown the strength of his arm,
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
He has filled the hungry with good things,
He has come to the help of his servant Israel
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
Ant. I have power to lay down my life, and I have power to take it up again.
INTERCESSIONS
The Savior of mankind by dying destroyed death and by rising again restored life. Let us humbly ask him:
Redeemer of the world, give us a greater share of your passion through a deeper spirit of repentance,
May your Mother, comfort of the afflicted, protect us,
Look with love on those who suffer because of our indifference,
You humbled yourself by being obedient even to accepting death, death on a cross,
Transform the bodies of the dead to be like your own in glory,
Our Father who art in heaven,
Concluding Prayer
Almighty ever-living God,
DISMISSAL
May the Lord bless us,
