Apr 29, 1945: The Document That Tried to Organize Collapse

Listen Later

Even in collapse, systems try to define what comes next.

On April 29, 1945, Adolf Hitler signed his final political testament in a Berlin bunker, attempting to reorganize leadership as the regime around him disintegrated. The document reassigned authority across political and party structures, reflecting how deeply intertwined government control, industrial output, and wartime production had become. Figures like Martin Bormann were positioned within that system, even as its foundations collapsed. In the aftermath, the unraveling of those relationships would force a restructuring of Germany’s corporate and industrial landscape, separating business operations from the centralized control that had defined the war economy.
