“Even in laughter the heart may ache, and the end of joy may be grief. The backslider in heart will be filled with the fruit of his ways, and a good man will be filled with the fruit of his ways.” — Proverbs 14:13–14

“And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake.” — Mark 13:37

Sometimes, life feels like a rollercoaster. You might laugh with friends at school or post a perfect pic online, but deep inside, you’re struggling—maybe with loneliness, stress, or feeling like you're pretending to be okay. Proverbs 14:13 reminds us that not everything is as it seems. We can smile on the outside and still ache on the inside. God sees beyond our surface.

In Mark 13, Jesus talks about the end times and tells His followers to “stay awake.” Not just to avoid falling asleep, but to stay spiritually alert—to be aware of what’s going on in our hearts and lives. When things get tough, or the world seems dark and confusing, we’re called to live with purpose and pay attention to what matters.

These verses connect in a powerful way. Whether you’re feeling fake joy or real pain, or you’re distracted by everything going on around you, God is calling you to check your heart and stay focused on Him.

THINK ABOUT IT

1. What’s really going on in your heart? Are you laughing on the outside but hurting inside? God wants to meet you in that honest place.

2. Are you paying attention to what matters? Jesus tells us to “stay awake”—that means living with awareness, not drifting through life distracted or spiritually asleep.

3. What “fruit” is your life growing? Proverbs says both the backslider and the faithful person will be filled with the results of their choices. What direction are you heading in today?

BOTTOM LINE

It’s easy to hide behind a smile or zone out in a world full of distractions. But God sees the truth of our hearts, and He invites us to live awake—honestly, intentionally, and anchored in Him.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for seeing me completely—even when I try to hide behind a smile or get lost in distractions. Help me to stay awake to what You’re doing in my life. When my heart aches, remind me You are near. When I’m tempted to drift or fall back, call me back to You. Fill me with the fruit of faithfulness and help me live with purpose each day. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
