Ephesians 3:18-19

You walk into that airplane, you sit down in your assigned seat, you put on your seatbelt and you feel very confined. Here I am in this airplane, in this little seat with a seatbelt on. But then you take off and you know what happens? You transfer from boundaries to horizons. It seems like you can see forever! That’s what God wants to do for us. Too many of us are satisfied with boundaries when God wants to give us horizons. This is especially true when it comes to understanding the love of God. We are so prone not to realize the horizons of God’s love. Listen to Ephesians 3:18-19. Paul is praying for us that we “might be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; and to know the love of Christ, which passes knowledge, that you might be filled with all the fullness of God.”

Now what is Paul praying about here? Well, number one he’s concerned about our narrowness. You know sometimes we as God’s people can get rather narrow. Our family, our relatives, our church or if we’re in a larger church, our Sunday school class, our fellowship group; He said I want you to be able to comprehend with all the saints. Not just some of the saints, all of the saints. What is the vast horizon of the love of God? Our love ought to be as big as God’s love is and God loved the world. Paul was also concerned about my selfishness. That I might “know the love of Christ” oh it’s easy to get selfish these days. It’s so easy just to pull into ourselves. He says I don’t want you to do that. I want you to see that God’s love is so big and so great. “God so loved the world,” that’s the breadth of His love; “He gave His only begotten Son,” that’s the length of His love; “That whosoever believes in Him should not perish,” that’s the depth of His love; “But have everlasting life” (John 3:16) that’s the height of His love.

Our narrowness, our selfishness, our emptiness; “that you might be filled unto all the fullness of God.” He doesn’t want us to be empty; He wants us to be full. Today let’s step out of our narrow little boundaries and let’s walk by faith into the horizon of the greatness of God’s love.
