April 25 – Ephesians 4:1

Ephesians 4:1

When a child is born into a family, the family watches that child grow up. There comes a day when that child starts to crawl, and then toddle around, and then starts to walk. This is true in the Christian life. We’re born into the family of God through faith in Jesus Christ, and then God immediately expects us to start walking. He doesn’t treat us like little babies. He has adopted us, given us an adult standing in His family and God the Father wants us to start walking. That’s what Paul writes about in Ephesians 4:1, “I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that you walk worthy of the calling to which you are called.” Why is the Christian life compared to a walk? Well, for one thing it starts with a step of faith. “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved” (John 10:9). We take that step of faith, faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Then we start walking with the Lord Jesus Christ. We live a step at a time, a day at a time. “The steps of a good man are ordered of the LORD” (Psalm 37:23). Spurgeon used to say, “The stops of a good man are also ordered of the Lord.” In order to walk with the Lord we need spiritual strength; we make progress, we’re walking with Him toward a specific goal. Now Paul tells us that this walk comes from His work in us. “I therefore, beseech you.” “Therefore” reaches back to the end of chapter 3 where he says God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think. How? According to the power that works in us. Because God’s power is working, we can be walking! You see in the first three chapters Paul has spelled out all that God has done for us. It’s doctrinal. Now he’s talking about duty. He’s been telling us of the riches of God’s grace, now the responsibilities of God’s people. We move from wealth to walk.

From calling to conduct and we’re to walk worthy of this calling that God has given to us. What is our motive? Because we love Him. He’s working in us and He’s working through us as we are walking with Him living the way Christians ought to live.
