In U.S. politics and security
Investigators say the gunman at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner appears to have been targeting President Trump and other Trump administration officials, not just the president. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said the suspect is expected to face federal charges including assaulting an officer, firing a gun, and attempting to kill a federal officer. Rep. Ryan Zinke also said security around Trump has tightened since the July 2024 assassination attempt in Pennsylvania. Trump, meanwhile, used the moment to argue for his long-running ballroom project, because naturally the answer to gunfire is architecture.
In the UK
Labour MPs from different factions are reportedly discussing how a transition away from Keir Starmer could be managed, shifting the conversation from whether to remove him to how. That includes possible timelines, triggers, and the mechanics of forcing a leadership contest, which is always reassuring when a party starts sounding like it has a contingency plan for its own front bench.
Separately, a Salford mother has admitted defrauding the benefits system of more than £75,000 over five years by claiming her partner was homeless while they continued living together. Kelly Clews received a 48-week suspended sentence, plus rehabilitation requirements, unpaid work, and a mental health treatment programme.
In tech and social media
Researchers say AI-generated videos of crying U.S. service members, along with fake military influencers, are spreading quickly online because they trigger emotional reactions before users spot the deception. Detection tools and labels do not appear to be keeping up, and Meta says it is reviewing accounts flagged for this kind of content.
In the Middle East
Israel has issued forced evacuation orders for parts of southern Lebanon as tensions with Hezbollah continue to rise. Hezbollah rejected Benjamin Netanyahu’s claim that it is undermining the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire, which is, as ever, a lovely sign that diplomacy is on vacation.
In weather
At least two people were killed when a powerful tornado tore through northern Texas on Saturday night, damaging homes across several neighborhoods in Wise County. Emergency responders treated or transported six people with storm-related injuries, and the severe weather threat is expected to continue, with millions across the South and Midwest at risk. Wildfires are also still burning in parts of Georgia.
