In Washington
President Trump says a security evacuation disrupted the White House Correspondents’ Dinner after a failed shooting attempt near the event, and that footage showing him falling came during the fast-moving response. The suspect has been identified as Cole Allen, who reportedly sent a note to family and friends shortly before rushing through security.
Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick said he recognized gunfire, guests sheltered in place, and his fiancée, Jacqui Heinrich, was rushed out. The Justice Department is also pointing to the incident as it seeks to dismiss a preservation lawsuit over Trump’s planned $400 million ballroom on the White House grounds. One crisis, apparently, is now part of the legal briefing.
In U.S. politics and the Fed
Sen. Thom Tillis says he will now support Kevin Warsh’s nomination to lead the Federal Reserve after the Justice Department ended its investigation into Fed Chair Jerome Powell. The probe had centered on renovations at the Fed’s Washington headquarters. Tillis said he wanted assurance the department was not being used to pressure the central bank, and the Senate Banking Committee is expected to take up the nomination this week.
In Africa
Mali’s defense minister, Sadio Camara, was killed when a car bomb struck his residence in Kati, according to the government. Officials said the attack came during coordinated assaults by insurgents, including the West African affiliate of al-Qaida, and that the country will observe two days of mourning. It is another brutal reminder that the security picture in the Sahel remains deeply unstable.
