Ephesians 1:6
Why does God do what He does? Well, we read in Scripture that what He does is “according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of the glory of his grace.” You find this in Ephesians 1:6, “To the praise of the glory of his grace, through which he hath made us accepted in the beloved.” And in the previous verse He says He does this “according to the good pleasure of His will.” Now I suppose there are times when we wonder why is God doing what He’s doing or why doesn’t God do something? It’s so easy for us to second guess God. Well, when that happens, turn to Ephesians chapter 1 and remember He does what He does “according to the good pleasure of His will.” He does what He does according “to the praise of the glory of His grace.”
To begin with, God’s will is perfect. Nobody has to counsel God. Nobody has to explain anything to God. His will is perfect. His glory is excellent. God is a God of glory and in the glory of God you have the sum total of all that He is and all that He does. Now when you put the glory of God together with the grace of God, “according to the good pleasure of His will to the praise of the glory of His grace,” you have got a combination. If the will of God is perfect, and if the glory of God is excellent, and if the grace of God is wonderful, and He does what He does according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, then what do we have to complain about? See our problem is we want Him to do our will. We want Him to please us.
We think that our will is perfect. No, His will is perfect. His glory is excellent. His grace is wonderful and all of this is through the Lord Jesus Christ. He has lavished all of this upon us. He has made us accepted in the beloved one. We’re not accepted in ourselves. We’re not accepted in our own good works. We are accepted in Jesus Christ. Now if we are in Jesus Christ, then God will work out His perfect will. If we are in Jesus Christ, then we can bring glory to Him. If we are in Jesus Christ, we can bring praise to the glory of His grace.
