Ephesians 1:7-8
Picture if you will, a confused, guilty criminal sitting in prison absolutely bankrupt, waiting for execution. Well, that’s the situation of every unsaved person, everyone who has never trusted Christ as Savior. Confused, guilty, a criminal, in prison, bankrupt, waiting for execution and that’s why the Lord Jesus Christ died for us and arose again. Listen to Ephesians 1:7-8, “In whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace; in which He has abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;” (paraphrase). Let’s start with the prison. We need redemption. What is redemption? Redemption means to be set free by paying a price. Unsaved people are in bondage to sin.
They are in prison, if you please, and the Lord Jesus Christ delivers us from the bondage of sin through His blood. “In whom we have redemption through his blood.” He paid to set us free. Not only are we in the bondage of sin a part from Jesus Christ, but we have the burden of sin. We have our criminal in prison and he is guilty. What does he need? Forgiveness, “The forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace” all of this through the Lord Jesus Christ. When God saved you, He redeemed you. He set you free from the bondage of sin. He forgave you. He took care of the guilty record against you, the burden of sin; but that’s not all. What will you do about the bankruptcy of sin? Well, the Word of God tells us in Ephesians 1:7, “according to the riches of His grace.” Our confused, guilty criminal in prison is set free.
He is forgiven. The record is wiped clear, and he is given the riches of the grace of God. We’re no longer bankrupt. And why did He do all of this? Because of His wonderful love for us. Then when you get out of prison, the Lord gives you wisdom and guidance to show you how to live your life. I can’t think of a more wonderful thing than to experience the miracle of salvation. For God takes care of the bondage of sin, the bankruptcy of sin, the burden of sin, and then He blesses us and guides us each day.
