Ephesians 1:9-10
There are two powers at work in your world today. There’s the power of Satan. Satan wants to tear everything apart. And there’s the power of Jesus Christ. He is trying to put all things together. In fact, that is God’s ultimate purpose according to Ephesians 1:10, “That in the dispensation of the fullness of times He [God] might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in Him.” You see at the beginning everything was together. There was no disunity, and then Satan rebelled and Satan wanted to have his way and in our universe we had two wills instead of one will. You see the consequence of that, “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23).
Throughout the Old Testament Scriptures you see God working to bring a Savior into the world and you see Satan working trying to keep that Savior from coming into the world, and then the Lord Jesus came and He died on the cross. It’s always impressed me that the cross is a plus sign. That’s right! In the cross the Lord Jesus Christ is putting things together. God is going to “gather together in one all things in Christ,” and at the cross God has done this great work of redemption. And now today God is at work in this world, through His people, by His Spirit, using His Word to bring things together. He’s uniting lost sinners to the Savior. He’s uniting Jews and Gentiles and all races and peoples in His Church. He is uniting homes. He is putting lives together.
Now if you’re a Christian, God wants to put your life together and to use you to put other things together that are not what they ought to be in this world. It’s good to go through life with a plus sign. It’s good to go through life with a cross and say we’re going to bring things together in Jesus Christ. One day when our Lord returns and He sets up His Kingdom, all things are going to be gathered together in one in Christ. But meanwhile, let’s you and I be a part of the answer, not a part of the problem. Let’s go through this day putting things together to the glory of God.
