Ephesians 1:13-14
Let’s pause together to give thanks for the Holy Spirit of God and for what He has done for us as the people of God. What has He done? Well, listen to Ephesians 1:13-14, “In Whom you also trusted after that you heard the word of truth, the Gospel of your salvation, in Whom also when you believed, you were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise, who is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of His glory.” These first 14 verses of Ephesians chapter 1 are remarkable. In verses 4 through 6 we’re told what God the Father has done for us. In verses 7 through 12 what God the Son has done and now verses 13 and 14 what the Holy Spirit has done and each of these sections ends with the same kind of praise.
To the praise of His glory; to the praise of the glory of His grace. Why has God done all of this for us? To the praise of His glory. Not just to change our lives, not just to make life easier for us, not just to solve our problems. No. It’s all been done to the praise of His glory. Well, let’s get back to our original thought. The Holy Spirit of God has done so much for us. Let’s pause to give thanks. First of all, that He wrote the Word of God. We could not have trusted unless we heard the Word of truth. I thank God for the Word of God. Oh I enjoy studying and reading the Word of God. And the Word of God told me about the Son of God and the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit of God opened my heart to the Word. He convicted me. He showed me my need and He showed me that Jesus Christ could meet my need, and then when I trusted Him, do you know what He did? He sealed me.
That means I have the assurance of my salvation. He sealed me to the day of redemption and He has given me the down payment. He is the earnest. He gives to me a foretaste of glory as I walk with the Holy Spirit of God. Let’s give thanks for the Holy Spirit today for giving us the Bible, for showing us the Savior, for giving us eternal life through faith in Christ sealing us and giving us that foretaste of glory.
