Een gesprek met Chris de Ploeg over kolonialisme, kapitalisme en fascisme, naar aanleiding van zijn nieuwe boek De Grote Koloniale Oorlog. Het boek biedt een historische analyse van de Tweede Wereldoorlog door deze binnen een grotere koloniale geschiedenis te plaatsen, wat ons helpt de huidige opkomst van extreem rechts en het zwijgen over racisme en kolonialisme in de gevestigde politiek beter te begrijpen.

De Tweede Wereldoorlog wordt nog vaak verteld als het verhaal van het ‘vrije Westen’ tegen het fascisme. Ons kompas voor goed en kwaad. Maar niets is minder waar. Het fascisme en het liberalisme zijn hecht met elkaar verwant, en komen voort uit het kolonialisme. In de Grote Koloniale Oorlog wordt harde metten gemaakt met koloniale illusies over WOII, een oorlog die door de Ploeg als één van de grootste slagvelden wordt gezien van een nog grotere oorlog. De 500-jarige oorlog tegen gekoloniseerde volkeren, arbeiders en vrouwen. Een oorlog tegen elke vorm van anti-kapitalisme en elke beweging voor gelijkheid. Een oorlog die nooit is opgehouden.

Hoe schrijven we de geschiedenis van de Tweede Wereldoorlog als we deze plaatsen in 500 jaar koloniale geschiedenis? En welke verhalen, zelfs binnen 1939-1945, worden uitgewist doordat we door een koloniale bril naar WOII kijken? De Ploeg beantwoordt deze vragen met schokkende feiten en legt de nodige verbanden tussen veel van de belangrijkste gebeurtenissen van de afgelopen 500 jaar. Verwacht een toegankelijke crash-course in de wereldgeschiedenis, door de ogen van de verworpenen der aarde.

Chris de Ploeg is een grassroots organizer, journalist en auteur van De Grote Koloniale Oorlog (2025) en Oekraïne in het Kruisvuur (2016). Hij is mede-oprichter en kern-organisator bij Aralez, een grassroots-organisatie voor dekolonisatie, en organizer en beleidsmedewerker bij de anti-koloniale socialistische partij De Vonk.

“Ik zie geen kleur, want iedereen is gelijk aan mij”, is een veelgebruikte uitdrukking in Nederland. “Positieve discriminatie” in het onderwijs en de arbeidsmarkt stuiten vaak op weerstand en kritiek. Toch voert ECHO, Expertisecentrum Diversiteitsbeleid, al 25 jaar programma’s uit in het kader van positieve actie, de Nederlandse vertaling van “Affirmative Action”, met steun van het Ministerie van Onderwijs en grote namen in het bedrijfsleven. Hoe heeft ECHO dit bereikt en wat kunnen we van deze aanpak leren? In een gesprek met Mary Tupan, directeur van ECHO, wordt het publiek uitgenodigd om deze vragen te onderzoeken.

Achtergrond spreker: 

Mary Tupan-Wenno is de uitvoerend directeur van ECHO, Expertisecentrum voor Diversiteitsbeleid in Den Haag, Nederland. Haar professionele betrokkenheid bij ontwikkelingen op het gebied van diversiteit en inclusie in het hoger onderwijs begon bij het ministerie van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap. Mary heeft meer dan 30 jaar ervaring met het ontwikkelen van beleid en programma's om de toegang tot en het succes van ondervertegenwoordigde groepen in het hoger onderwijs te verbeteren, met een specifieke focus op etnische diversiteit. Mary is een van de oprichters van het European Access Network (1991) en van GAPS, Global Access to Postsecondary Education Initiative (2016) en een lid van de raad van bestuur van zowel EAN als GAPS. ECHO is een non-profitorganisatie die zich richt op de ontwikkeling van nieuwe strategieën, beleid en praktijk om diversiteit en inclusie in het hoger onderwijs en de arbeidsmarkt te verbeteren. ECHO werkt nationaal en internationaal samen met scholen, universiteiten, bedrijven, overheden, studenten- en maatschappelijke organisaties.

The goal of the decolonial learning sessions is to build a larger and more sustainable activist community and network which can exchange and learn more about decolonial theory and practise. During the online lectures and interactive Q&A sessions, participants will be provided with perspectives on decolonization, activist movements, colonial history, different forms of oppression, spirituality, and how neo-colonialism is manifesting today. The program is meant for those who are interested in being part of, social movements, activism or who want to learn more about the ongoing global struggle for decolonization and dismantling forms of oppression. Sinds 7 oktober komen er veel meer meldingen van moslimhaat binnen bij Stichting Meld Islamofobie. Rahma Bavelaar en Ibtissam Abaâziz van de stichting zien dat politici die zich stellig voor Israël uitspreken meewerken aan die toegenomen islamofobie, waarbij Moslims constant als potentiële daders worden gezien. En dat is niet de eerste keer. We zagen hetzelfde patroons tijdens de invasie van Irak in 2003. De invasie van Afghanistan in 2001. Of als we langer teruggaan: het kolonialisme in Indonesië en de kruistochten. Het racisme dat we vandaag de dag voelen is direct verbonden aan minstens 500 jaar van koloniale uitbuiting en invasies in het buitenland. In deze Decolonial Learning Session van Aralez gaan we dieper in op islamofobie als koloniale boemerang. In hoeverre kunnen we islamofobie verklaren door de belangen van imperialistische oorlogen en uitbuiting? En hoe kunnen we verder werken aan solidariteit tussen mensen van kleur hier en in het Globale Zuiden? Praat en luister mee op 28 maart op Zoom.

If we want to strengthen the decolonial movement in Europe, what are aspects we need to be mindful of? What are successes that already have been achieved? And what are challenges we need to tackle? In this Decolonial Learning Session team members of Decolonial Europe Day share their experiences in European civil society on these questions. They will discuss work they do and reflect on what the decolonial movement needs considering the current political climate in European countries.

In deze decolonial learning session kijken we naar de diverse strategieën voor het verantwoordelijk houden van de krijgsmacht voor oorlogsmisdaden, in het bijzonder gezien de Nederlandse steun aan Israël. We bekijken wat voor pijnpunten er zijn met betrekking tot Nederlandse krijgsmacht en naar uiteenlopende strategieën om onrecht te stoppen; van juridische strategieën tot activistische voorbeelden zoals Pal Action die door directe actie laten zien hoe je een wapenfabriek permanent kan sluiten.Nederland stuurt F35 onderdelen naar Israël. Hiermee steunt Nederland de best gedocumenteerde genocide in de geschiedenis. Zionistische militia stichtte Israël in 1948 middels etnische zuivering campagne waarbij meer dan 750.000 Palestijnen huis en haard verloren, 531 dorpen werden vernietigd en 11 stedelijke buurten werden geruimd van inwoners. In 2023 klaagden vier mensenrechtenorganisaties de Nederlandse staat aan om te eisen dat de regering in lijn gaat handelen met onder meer de eigen beleidskaders, (grond)wettelijke verplichtingen en internationale afspraken. De Haagse rechter dacht hier anders over en gaf hiermee Nederland groen licht voor verdere militaire steun aan de apartheidsstaat Israël. In Nederland is het niet makkelijk de krijgsmacht haar handelen ter discussie te stellen. In 2021 kopte de Correspondent: Er is nog nooit een Nederlandse militair veroordeeld voor oorlogsmisdaden. Dat kan niet, zegt deze advocaat. Verder wordt de krijgsmacht als grootste vervuilende industrie vrijgesteld van emissiereductie en diverse milieuwetten. Dit alles roept de vraag op: Hoe houden we Nederland (de krijgsmacht) verantwoordelijk voor oorlogsmisdaden? Geef je op en leer meer. 

Bio speaker: Benjamin Baars doet onderzoek naar wapenhandel en de wapenindustrie, daarnaast is hij docent geschiedenis. Hij is actief bij de organisatie Stop Wapenhandel en Justice Now. Hij studeerde Politieke Wetenschappen, Militaire Wetenschappen en Geschiedenis.

Bio Speaker: Lokono and Kaliña Descendant from Surinam, teacher, social worker and motivational speaker active in Whe Khalwabetjie and Khose. Activist fighting for acknowledgement and rights of Surinamese Indigenous peoples, amongst other places also in a women collective called ‘Native Power’.

How can we develop a decolonial feminist pedagogy that is not rooted in supremacy over the non-human? In the book “We Belong to the Earth”, scholar Nadira Amorjee goes into these questions by also looking at the notion of interconnectedness and oneness of being. She does this by looking at concepts of Uhuru and Ubuntu that are prevalent philosophical notions from her home-country, South Africa. During this 28th decolonial learning session we will delve into the question; how can we decolonise the self and our different relationships to earth, each other and all living beings? The session will be an in depth interview with Nadira Amorjee about her book and followed by a Q&A.
Bio Speaker:
Nadira is a decolonial feminist scholar, working internationally. Previously, she was a Senior Researcher at the Nordic Africa Institute on the Africa Scholar Programme at Uppsala University, Sweden. She is currently a Research Fellow with the Identity, Diversity and Inclusion (IDI) Research Group in the Sociology Department at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Her previous book dealt with questions on decolonising academia by following the decolonial student movements in Cape Town and Amsterdam: Reimagining the Dream: Decolonising Academia by Putting the Last First (2018). Her current research interest focuses on decolonial feminist pedagogies with her latest book: We belong to the Earth: towards a decolonial feminist inquiry rooted in uhuru and ubuntu. This book deals specifically with the ways in which ‘conscientisation’ can lead towards justice and healing. It attempts to connect the classroom to the community by inserting lived experiences against epistemicides: the personal is political. She has experimented with flipping the classroom using Freirian (1970) concepts of learning through sharing; connecting ontology with epistemology by bridging art, activism and scholarship. 

Art collectives Stories of Kathak and CTRL+ALT+IDENTITY respectively emerged in 2019 and 2021. Both collectives walk/dance different paths and histories, but have one thing in common: fighting for social justice for Women of Colour in the Global North, specifically The Netherlands. From our marginalized positions we constantly navigate, negotiate and claim our spaces in dominant white institutions, but also exist and thrive outside them. Our guiding principle within this fight is: we have always been connected. It emerged during the creation of CTRL+ALT+IDENTITY and grew further in Stories of Kathak. By doing so, we decolonize from the idea that art is an individual expression and something separate from life. But how does this work? And how can you make sure those principles sustain when your white environment demands something else?

Bio speaker: Anima Jhagroe-Ruissen (she/her) identifies as Social Artivist. Through dance and henna she challenges, with other Woman of Color, dominant narratives and explores alternative worlds beyond resistance. They create spaces where they can be together, learn through their senses and bodily archives and talk about their experiences and positionalities in relation to each other and life of Earth. Important elements in her art praxis are collectiveness, intersectional and decolonial approaches, materiality and her life experiences as a mix of Surinamese-Hindustani and Dutch-Zeeuwse descent.
