The state government reckons councils are holding Tasmania back, blaming NIMBY politics for blocking developments.

It wants developers seeking to build big projects to be able to sidestep councils to get approvals.

But are councils hindering? 

Hundreds of millions of dollars worth of proposals including apartments, hotels and retail have been approved but no sod has yet been turned.
