In 2017, Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan shocked Howard Stern by claiming he twice witnessed a person transform into something not human. His story was ridiculed as another “lizard person” tale but the idea of shapeshifters is far older, stretching across cultures and millennia.

From the reptilian figurines of ancient Mesopotamia, to the serpent princesses of Southeast Asia, to Hawaiian Moʻo spirits, Catholic exorcisms, and the feathered serpent gods of the Americas, the same pattern repeats: beings who look human until suddenly they don’t.

In this video, I explore why stories of shapeshifters appear everywhere, from Billy Corgan’s modern encounter to the oldest myths of humanity.
