Are Superhero Films in Trouble or Will They Be Triumphant in 2018 & Beyond?

Listen Later

On this 232nd episode of Heroes (Monday, April 2nd, 2018), Jon Schnepp, Robert Meyer Burnett, John Rocha and Jay Washington discuss the following from the world of Heroes and Villians:Are Superhero films in trouble for 2018 and beyond?Outside of Marvel studios, every other company has had a very hard time establishing their brand, let alone a cohesive universe. What is the problem? Are the studio executives in charge so out of touch that they are fumbling and tripping up what should be the easiest delivery imaginable? The comics have decades of incredible stories, with lots of production design and art for a jumping off point. We have seen many films be shut down and reshot, due to executives second guessing their own audience, and serving up a giant failure sandwich almost every time. When will these failures add up to letting the filmmakers actually do their jobs or is it ultimately the executive whose job it is to make these final and mostly fatal decisions. We remember the failures, but what about the success when this has happened?Mike Allred’s Madman, Howard Chaykin’s American Flagg, Frank Miller’s Martha Washington. Are some of these characters not built for this kind of storytelling? Are certain books and comic books not translatable to the big screen or as a series or mini-series?Bizarre characters like Marvel’s Foolkiller, DC’s Inferior Five, Image’s The Darkness. What makes certain characters so easy to identify with, while others are too remote or too goofy or too unrealistic? With these massive shared universes, with many companies planning out these giant event films years in advance that all tie in with each other, is this the way to continue, or should stand-alone adventures be the new franchises? We have both right now, but companies follow the money.Similar to comics, these characters must have a turnover rate every few years to remain fresh and current. What worked for the 90’s is out in the early aughts, as is the same right now. We have actors and actresses who have lived as certain characters for over a decade, and now even entire worlds of characters must be reborn?Follow Schnepp: https://twitter.com/JonSchneppFollow Robert: https://twitter.com/BurnettRMFollow Rocha: https://twitter.com/TheRochaSaysFollow Jay: https://twitter.com/MrJayWashingtonFollow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/ColliderVideoFollow us on Instagram: https://instagram.com/ColliderVideoFollow us on Facebook: https://facebook.com/colliderdotcom As the online source for movies, television, breaking news, incisive content, and imminent trends, Collider is more than an essential destination.
