Eastern cultures had Shamans who worked with hallucinogenic plants and mushrooms which allowed a deeper connection to their spirit world and communicated with symbolic figures whilst in a state of trance. Other south American cultures, especially those of the Amazon rainforest, also used hallucinogenic plants such as Ayahuasca, know as a 'plant teacher'. Kabbalist's in Judaism use the Tarot as part of their mystical traditions in receiving and learning the words of God (Ein Sof).
