We're becoming "professional friends". Counseling used to mean holding clients accountable, helping them determine boundaries, and steering them towards brutal examination, where needed. (Still does in my office!) Sadly, we seem to be devolving into a professional culture that, as one friend of mine put it, is all about meeting with people an hour at a time on a "rent-a-friend" basis. That has got to stop.
