* Introduce your son to the activity together. Together is the important thing here. Not words alone.

* Model the safety precautions and then teach them as you model them.

* Allow your son to touch, handle or do the activity under your direct supervision.

* Allow him to go solo with your indirect supervision

* Send the message he is able to (fill in the blanks) and he has what it takes to make good decisions on his own.

Side Note: Brain Development, Impulse control, basic maturity are also necessary considerations.
