Second Victim Syndrome (SVS) was initially coined by Dr. Andrew Wu in 2000. In cases of any medical errors or death, the first victim is always the patient, while the second victim is any healthcare provider (i.e., physician, nurse, patient care technician, paramedic, etc.) who was involved in that error or death. SVS describes the suffering that the healthcare provider experiences as a result of the psychological trauma the event causes.
