Are You Comfortable in the Wilderness? | The Afterglow Ep. 13

Listen Later

Sometimes the wilderness isn’t where God left us.

Sometimes it’s where we stay… because we keep clinging to the very things He’s asking us to lay down.

In this episode of The Afterglow, TuneThyHeart and JTfollowsJC discuss wilderness seasons, idols of the heart, generational cycles, and why sometimes the very things harming us are the things we keep returning to because they feel familiar.

When God brought the Israelites out of Egypt, the wilderness was never meant to be their permanent home.

The journey to the Promised Land should have taken about eleven days.

But because of unbelief… because of complaining… because they kept turning back to the very things God was trying to deliver them from…

That eleven-day journey turned into forty years.

And when you really sit with that story, it raises a powerful question:

Have we become comfortable in the wilderness?

How often is the Holy Spirit asking us to lay something down… and we delay that freedom for years?

A habit.

A relationship.

A coping mechanism.

A sin we keep returning to.

Hebrews 3:18–19 (ESV)

“And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.”

Numbers 14:33–34 (ESV)

“And your children shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years and shall suffer for your faithlessness, until the last of your dead bodies lies in the wilderness.”

1 Corinthians 10:6–7 (ESV)

“Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did. Do not be idolaters as some of them were.”

Ezekiel 14:3 (ESV)

“These men have taken their idols into their hearts.”

John 8:34 (ESV)

“Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.”

Joshua 24:14 (ESV)

“Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served.”

2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV)

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

Galatians 5:1 (ESV)

“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”

Isaiah 43:18–19 (ESV)

“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing.”

John 8:36 (ESV)

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

Deuteronomy 5:33 (ESV)

“You shall walk in all the way that the Lord your God has commanded you, that you may live, and that it may go well with you.”

God didn’t bring you out of Egypt just to leave you wandering.

The Promised Land lies ahead.

But sometimes the hardest part of the journey… is letting God remove Egypt from our hearts.
