Arekia, executive director and Velvet, program director of Mississippi Votes, discussed the statewide voter organization and how it is in the unique position of engaging young Mississippians in civic involvement.
Led by members of the millennial generation and younger, they also discussed how important it is to meet the youth of Mississippi where they are when it comes to voting engagement and giving them the space to create the solutions that they would like to see.
On Juneteenth, Mississippi Votes launched a campaign called Up2Us in hopes of engaging the community around upcoming midterm elections.
Arekia is a Jackson, Mississippi native and graduate of Jackson State University, and Velvet is a McCool, Mississippi native and graduate of Millsaps College.
