Arson Attack On Synagogue In North Macedonia

Listen Later

Skopje, North Macedonia – The Israeli ambassador to North Macedonia, Viviane Aizen, shared video showing an arson attack on a synagogue in Skopje.

The footage shows two individuals jumping over a fence and approaching the entrance of the building. They spray a flammable liquid and then throw a lit torch, which results in a fire.

Aizen described the incident as: “A deeply disturbing antisemitic incident in North Macedonia, the first since 1945, striking at the very values of coexistence that the Jewish community upholds. I stand with the community and call on the Macedonian authorities to bring those responsible to justice.”

Authorities from Skopje police reported that a fuel canister and traces of burning were found in the yard of the religious building.

They stated: “Immediately after receiving the report, police officers went to the scene and measures are being taken to clarify the case.”

The Jewish community in North Macedonia condemned the act and urged authorities to fully investigate and ensure consistent application of the law, as well as a united condemnation from religious leaders, institutions, and citizens.

In a statement signed by community president Pepo Levi, it was said: “This act is not only an attack on a religious building, but a deeply disturbing blow to the fundamental values of a civilized society – coexistence, dignity, and mutual respect.”
