This week I talk with Emicia Parker about Art of the Heart. Emicia walks us through the message of her art and the heart behind it.
Learn about Emicia Parker:
Emicia Yvette Parker is a classically-trained fine artist, published writer, community leader and educator of proud Jamaican heritage based in Brooklyn, New York. Growing up in foster care, her discovery of art provided her primary understanding of her purpose. Her multiple creative abilities have both defined, and refined, her life’s work.
Having studied art throughout her life at such decorated educational institutions as Pratt Institute, Fashion Institute of Technology (F.I.T.), and LaGuardia High School, her life abruptly detoured once her adopted mother, an educator, was dying. She then took on her mother’s torch and began her work as an educator, youth advocate, and community leader.
When she was crowned Ms New York through the Miss Plus America pageant system and a Miss Jamaica through the Miss Plus World pageant system, her community uplift only expanded. She has received a city council citation and a senate resolution, amongst other accolades, for her leadership. She also went back to school for leadership, earning her M.S.O.L. with honors distinction.
After burying three parents (both adopted parents and her biological mother), the global pandemic struck and the impulse to create art again struck with it. Emicia, who was then a thesis advisor, developed Empress by Emicia from an unshakable desire to see greater representation in the art world. It is her joy to create art that celebrates our beauty, history and unique stories. Thank you for visiting.
