Hi there,
How are you feeling today?
Last time, we talked about “Life Balance”, but today I would like to talk about something really important: YOUR MINDSET!
I want to dive deeper into how your mindset can shape your entire life.
Are you ready to explore this topic together?
Throughout my transformative journey, Carol S. Dweck’s book “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success” became a source of inspiration for me. Carol is an influential psychologist known for her pioneering research in the fields of motivation, personality, and developmental psychology. In the book, she introduces the concepts of fixed and growth mindsets and explains that the mindset you adopt plays a key role in shaping your success, happiness, and overall well-being. A fixed mindset believes that abilities are static, while a growth mindset thrives on the belief that abilities can be developed.
Let’s delve deeper and examine both of these ideas:
FIXED MINDSET
GROWTH MINDSET
In conclusion, the way we think, either with a fixed mindset or a growth mindset, has a significant impact on our success, happiness, and overall quality of life. By adopting a growth mindset, we allow ourselves to explore new opportunities, develop resilience, and constantly work towards self-improvement, which ultimately leads to greater accomplishments and a more satisfying life.
Now, we will discuss practical ways to determine your mindset, provide actionable tips for improvement, present real-world case studies, and offer a daily routine and a 30-day action plan for cultivating a growth mindset.
Let’s get you started with your first 4 key questions.
Self-Assessment Test:
Scoring: Mostly a): Fixed Mindset; Mostly b): Growth Mindset.
Let’s keep going with the assessment to get a better understanding of your mindset. Don’t worry, we’ll figure this out together!
Now, I want to ask you a few more questions. Please, be completely sincere. Are you up for it? Let’s dive in!
Please answer the following questions with “Agree,” “Disagree,” or “Neutral.”
Scoring: Count the number of “Agree” responses. The higher the score, the more likely you lean towards a fixed mindset.
So, do you have a fixed or a growth mindset?
Remember, you can develop a growth mindset with effort and practice. Developing a growth mindset involves cultivating a belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication, effort, and learning.
Do you want to develop a growth mindset? Well, here is an example to illustrate how you can develop a growth mindset.
Example: Learning a New Skill
Imagine you are passionate about a foreign country, let’s say you love Japan and you want to learn Japanese, but Japanese is a completely new language for you. In this scenario, you might initially face challenges that could trigger a fixed mindset.
Fixed Mindset Thoughts:
Instead of avoiding the challenge of learning Japanese, view it as an exciting opportunity for personal growth.
Recognise that everyone starts as a beginner, and improvement comes with practice.
By applying these principles to learning Japanese, you not only acquire a new skill but also develop a growth mindset that can be transferred to various aspects of your life. Remember that adopting a growth mindset is an ongoing practice, and with dedication, you will find yourself approaching challenges with resilience, enthusiasm, and a belief in your ability to continually improve.
A lot of my coachees usually have a fixed mindset when they first start working with me. That’s why they seek the help of a coach. However, thanks to their dedication, effort, and successful implementation of effective techniques, they can finish my programmes with a growth mindset and are happy with the results.
Here are some examples:
1. Sarah and James, are both in their 40s and working at the European Parliament, in Brussels. They avoided challenges, fearing failure and criticism. Resisted feedback, viewing it as a personal attack. And struggled with low morale and lacked motivation.
Now, they:
2. Emma and Michael, both in their 30s and working in European Affairs in Brussels, faced identical challenges. They had a fixed mindset and linked success solely to inherent talent. They constantly avoided setting challenging goals, limiting personal growth. And they repeatedly experienced frustration and dissatisfaction in their careers. But now, they:
1.Valued effort and perseverance, attributing success to hard work.
2. Open to feedback, seeing it as a means for professional development.
3. Set ambitious goals and worked diligently to achieve them.
3. Alex and Sophie, who are 50 and 32 years old respectively and both employed at the European Commission, had completely contrasting experiences. Alex views setbacks as opportunities to improve. Adapts to change and constantly updates skills. Known for innovative problem-solving, contributing to his successful career. Sophie displays a growth mindset by actively seeking new experiences. Learns from failures, leverages feedback, and builds strong connections, propelling her career forward.
The better way to improve is by acting immediately!
