Langston Hughes was an American poet, columnist and social activist from Joplin, Missouri. He was one of the first innovators of the art form named jazz poetry. He was the main figure in the Harlem Renaissance. His poetry depicted the lives of African-American in America.

Hughes is quoted as saying, “My seeking has been to explain and illuminate the Negro condition in America and obliquely that of all humankind.”

Hughes wanted to unite all the people of African descent around the world to encourage pride in their diverse culture.
