Most Christians don’t realize that, in the Great Commission, Jesus did not say, “Go therefore, and make disciples…” He said, “As you are going, make disciples..” Making disciples is not something we go to do; it’s some we do because of who we are. Today’s excerpt from Joy to Your World! is found on pages 37-39:
“You can think of your Personal Mission Field as the places you go week-in and week-out, and the people you encounter in those places on a regular basis. Jesus taught us to think of our calling to be and make disciples as taking place in the as-you-are-goings of our lives (Matt. 28.18-20). All we have to do is identify those places and people, and begin the work of bringing the joy of the Lord into every area of our lives.“This is your Personal Mission Field, and Jesus the Bringer of Joy has sent you to these places and people to bring the joy of His salvation and the Good News of His Kingdom.
“Now all you need is the make up your mind to take up your mission, and begin working your Personal Mission Field on behalf of the Bringer of Joy.”
For reflection or discussion
1. Do you regard yourself as a disciple of Jesus? How would you explain that to a non-Christian friend?
2. Does making disciples “as you are going” describe your life in Christ? In what ways?
Jesus did not call us be saved or forgiven or to go to heaven. He called us to make disciples. Getting saved and being forgiven is the gateway and provides the resources for making disciples. Going to heaven is the rest after our calling is through and our appointed time is over. Share today’s podcast with a friend. Talk about these matters, because they are of the essence of Christian life. You can order a copy of Joy to Your World! by going to The Ailbe Bookstore.
