In 2014, the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery started its New Beginnings initiative. Initially launched to benefit cancer survivors, ASLMS physicians volunteered to remove radiation tattoos pro bono. Recently, the ASLMS, under the leadership of its president Paul Friedman, MD, expanded the philanthropic campaign to create the New Beginnings Branding Tattoo Removal Program and partnered with the National Trafficking Sheltered Alliance to connect board-certified physicians with sex trafficking survivors for pro bono laser removal of branding tattoos.
