The story of Bluebeard was believed to be based on the legend of Gilles de Rais (1404-1440). He was a rich man with land and a castle and was known for his allegiance with Joan of Arc at Orleans. He lived an extravagant life with numerous wives and had resorted to black magic to restore his fortune. In 1440, he was accused of heresy and the murders of 140 women.
