Cinderella was written by The Brothers Grimm in 1812. The story is far different from the one you've grown up with and far darker. Cinderella loses her mother and her father marries an evil woman with two daughters. They are rich and immediately hate Cinderella. They put Cinderella to work in their home, constantly throwing lentils into the fire and demanding she pull each bean free. When Cinderella hears of a ball with the Prince, she wants more than anything to go. Listen as she finds a way.

This is the original fairy tale of Cinderella, sometimes found in older fairy tale compilations as The Little Glass Slipper. It utilizes the myth of oppression and victory and showcases how an honorable person can find justice in the face of adversity. The story has origins in a Greek tale by Strabo from 7BC, called Rhodopis, where a beautiful slave finds herself the new wife to the king of Egypt. Other versions, published in Italy in 1634 and France in 1697, also focus on the same themes of oppression and victory. In scholarly literature, the name Cinderella has taken on an archetypal meaning of the persecuted heroine, and the story is, of course, rebooted and retold numerous times every generation.
