The story of the alchemist is something of a puzzle, where the narrator is learning about a family curse. The curse, placed upon his family 600 years prior, leads to the death of every man by his thirty-second birthday. The narrator becomes consumed with research to identify the source of the curse and finds out that something supernatural, involving the elixir of life and possibly vampirism, has led to the deaths of his ancestors.
