ASSEMBLY Ep 05: Films to Teach and Preach With

Listen Later

This second half of the conversation begins with big moral questions raised in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Then each panelists names a film that is useful for addressing morality, theology, and/or politics in teaching or preaching contexts: The Gospel according to St. Matthew (directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini, 1964); Cotton Comes to Harlem (Ossie Davis, 1970); The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (Wes Anderson, 2004) — which has fascinating parallels with The Shape of Water; and Children of Men (Alfonso Cuarón, 2006).

Our panelists are

* Dr. Allison Whitney (Lubbock, TX): Associate Professor of Film and Media Studies, Texas Tech University
* Nina Cartier (Chicago, IL): Instructor, Harold Washington College
* Rev. Jason Chesnut (Baltimore, MD): storyteller, Lutheran (ELCA) pastor, and filmmaker
* Zac Settle (Nashville, TN): PhD student in theology, Vanderbilt University, and theology editor, The Other Journal.
