Atopic dermatitis (AD) is the most common and relapsing allergic disease of the skin. Atopic dermatitis (or atopic eczema) is an inflammatory skin condition characterized by pruritis, and often occurring in the skin flexures. The prevalence rate for atopic dermatitis is estimated at up to 25% in children and 2%-3% adults. The diagnosis and management of patients with atopic dermatitis presents challenges along the course of the disease. New findings from scientific research as to the pathophysiology of AD is redefining strategies for its therapeutic management.
