Asterix the Gaul: THIS IS MY JOB!

Listen Later

This week we are discussing Asterix the Gaul, the 1967 film from Dargaud.
Aly brings us into the mix with an introduction to the source material, the very popular Asterix comics (or albums, as they are referred to in Europe). She tells us all about the authors: Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo (their lives actually weren't horribly tragic!), and how Asterix came to be and the main characters/themes of the albums. She also takes us on a short history lesson of the Roman and Gaul conflict, which provides the major narrative for the stories and films.
Sarrah tells us as much as she could find about the animation studio and the release of Asterix (it was done without the original story creators knowledge, and used a lot of limited animation). Sarrah also has a lot to say about the layout of this movie, as it basically personally offends her life decisions.
Our recap has us honestly confused about camera movement choices, animation execution, where all the women are, and pretty much everything else.
For better or for worse, take a sip of that magic potion and join us on our quest to complete Asterix the Gaul!
