Posterior samples of source galaxies in strong gravitational lenses with score-based priors by Alexandre Adam et al. on Wednesday 30 November

Inferring accurate posteriors for high-dimensional representations of the

brightness of gravitationally-lensed sources is a major challenge, in part due

to the difficulties of accurately quantifying the priors. Here, we report the

use of a score-based model to encode the prior for the inference of undistorted

images of background galaxies. This model is trained on a set of

high-resolution images of undistorted galaxies. By adding the likelihood score

to the prior score and using a reverse-time stochastic differential equation

solver, we obtain samples from the posterior. Our method produces independent

posterior samples and models the data almost down to the noise level. We show

how the balance between the likelihood and the prior meet our expectations in

an experiment with out-of-distribution data.

PERISTOLE: PackagE that geneRates tIme delay plotS caused by graviTatiOnaL lEnsing by T. S. Sachin Venkatesh et al. on Wednesday 30 November

We present PERISTOLE to study the various time delays associated with the

pulsar rotation and other general relativistic aspects of binary pulsars. It is

made available as an open-source python package which takes some parameters of

the double pulsar system as input and outputs the rotational and latitudinal

lensing delays along with the geometric and Shapiro delays that arise due to

gravitational lensing. This package was intended to provide a way to quickly

analyse, evaluate and study the differences between variations of the same

systems and also to quantify the consequences that different parameters have

over the system. Through this research note, we briefly describe the motivation

behind PERISTOLE and showcase its capabilities using the only double pulsar

system ever found, J0737-3039.

ASTENA: a mission concept for a deep study of the transient gamma-ray sky and for nuclear astrophysics by E. Virgilli et al. on Wednesday 30 November

Gamma-ray astronomy is a branch whose potential has not yet been fully

exploited. The observations of elemental and isotopic abundances in supernova

(SN) explosions are key probes not only of the stellar structure and evolution

but also for understanding the physics that makes Type-Ia SNe as standard

candles for the study of the Universe expansion properties. In spite of its

crucial role, nuclear astrophysics remains a poorly explored field mainly for

the typical emission lines intensity which are vanishing small and requires

very high sensitivities of the telescopes. Furthermore, in spite that the

Galactic bulge-dominated intensity of positron annihilation line at 511 keV has

been measured, its origin is still a mystery due to the poor angular resolution

and insufficient sensitivity of the commonly employed instrumentation in the

sub-MeV energy domain. To answer these scientific issues a jump in sensitivity

and angular resolution with respect to the present instrumentation is required.

Conceived within the EU project AHEAD, a new high energy mission, capable of

tackling the previously mentioned topics, has been proposed. This concept of

mission named ASTENA (Advanced Surveyor of Transient Events and Nuclear

Astrophysics), includes two instruments: a Wide Field Monitor with Imaging and

Spectroscopic (WFM-IS, 2 keV - 20 MeV) capabilities and a Narrow Field

Telescope (NFT, 50 - 700 keV). Thanks to the combination of angular resolution,

sensitivity and large FoV, ASTENA will be a breakthrough in the hard X and soft

gamma--ray energy band, also enabling polarimetry in this energy band. In this

talk the science goals of the mission are discussed, the payload configuration

is described and expected performances in observing key targets are shown.

Visual Magnitude of the BlueWalker 3 Satellite by Anthony Mallama et al. on Wednesday 30 November

Observations have been carried out in order to assess the optical

characteristics of the BlueWalker 3 spacecraft which is the prototype for a new

satellite constellation. The illumination phase function has been determined

and evaluated. The average visual magnitude when seen overhead at the beginning

or ending of astronomical twilight is found to be +1.4.

Elements of effective machine learning datasets in astronomy by Bernie Boscoe et al. on Wednesday 30 November

In this work, we identify elements of effective machine learning datasets in

astronomy and present suggestions for their design and creation. Machine

learning has become an increasingly important tool for analyzing and

understanding the large-scale flood of data in astronomy. To take advantage of

these tools, datasets are required for training and testing. However, building

machine learning datasets for astronomy can be challenging. Astronomical data

is collected from instruments built to explore science questions in a

traditional fashion rather than to conduct machine learning. Thus, it is often

the case that raw data, or even downstream processed data is not in a form

amenable to machine learning. We explore the construction of machine learning

datasets and we ask: what elements define effective machine learning datasets?

We define effective machine learning datasets in astronomy to be formed with

well-defined data points, structure, and metadata. We discuss why these

elements are important for astronomical applications and ways to put them in

practice. We posit that these qualities not only make the data suitable for

machine learning, they also help to foster usable, reusable, and replicable

science practices.

Star & planet formation: Upcoming opportunities in the space-based infrared by Floris van der Tak. on Wednesday 30 November

While ALMA and JWST are revolutionizing our view of star and planet formation

with their unprecedented sensitivity and resolution at submillimeter and

near-IR wavelengths, many outstanding questions can only be answered with

observations in the thermal (mid- and far-) infrared domain. Many of these

questions require space-based observations, to achieve the necessary

sensitivity and/or wavelength coverage. In particular, how do interstellar

clouds develop filamentary structures and dense cores? What are the masses and

luminosities of objects at the earliest stages of star formation? What are the

gas masses of planet-forming disks, and how do these disks disperse during

planet formation? How is refractory and volatile material distributed within

the disks, and how does this evolve with time? This article reviews how

upcoming and planned balloon-borne and space-based telescopes for the mid- and

far-infrared will address these questions, and outlines which further missions

will be needed beyond 2030, when the ELTs will be in full operation.

A Bayesian approach to RFI mitigation by S. A. K. Leeney et al. on Wednesday 30 November

Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) is an endemic problem in radio astronomy.

Information in contaminated frequency channels is lost and it can lead to

significant systematic error if not properly modelled. In this paper we propose

a RFI mitigation methodology that takes a Bayesian approach, where contaminated

data is both flagged and managed as part of a single step fitting process. To

the authors knowledge, our approach is first-of-its-kind. We provide a

proof-of-concept of our methods which are also tested and shown to be effective

on both a simple toy model and when incorporated into the Bayesian data

analysis pipeline for REACH (a modern cosmological radio experiment).

FIREBall-2: flight preparation of a proven balloon payload to image the intermediate redshift circumgalactic medium by Vincent Picouet et al. on Wednesday 30 November

FIREBall-2 is a stratospheric balloon-borne 1-m telescope coupled to a UV

multi-object slit spectrograph designed to map the faint UV emission

surrounding z~0.7 galaxies and quasars through their Lyman-alpha line emission.

This spectro-imager had its first launch on September 22nd 2018 out of Ft.

Sumner, NM, USA. Because the balloon was punctured, the flight was abruptly

interrupted. Instead of the nominal 8 hours above 32 km altitude, the

instrument could only perform science acquisition for 45 minutes at this

altitude. In addition, the shape of the deflated balloon, combined with a full

Moon, revealed a severe off-axis scattered light path, directly into the UV

science detector and about 100 times larger than expected. In preparation for

the next flight, and in addition to describing FIREBall-2's upgrade, this paper

discusses the exposure time calculator (ETC) that has been designed to analyze

the instrument's optimal performance (explore the instrument's limitations and

subtle trade-offs).

GECAM Localization of High Energy Transients and the Systematic Error by Yi Zhao et al. on Wednesday 30 November

Gravitational wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor

(GECAM) is a pair of microsatellites (i.e. GECAM-A and GECAM-B) dedicated to

monitoring gamma-ray transients including gravitational waves high-energy

electromagnetic counterparts, Gamma-ray Bursts, Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters, Solar

Flares and Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes. Since launch in December 2020,

GECAM-B has detected hundreds of astronomical and terrestrial events. For these

bursts, localization is the key for burst identification and classification as

well as follow-up observations in multi-wavelength. Here, we propose a Bayesian

localization method with Poisson data with Gaussian background profile

likelihood to localize GECAM bursts based on the burst counts distribution in

detectors with different orientations. We demonstrate that this method can work

well for all kinds of bursts, especially for extremely short ones. In addition,

we propose a new method to estimate the systematic error of localization based

on a confidence level test, which can overcome some problems of the existing

method in literature. We validate this method by Monte Carlo simulations, and

then apply it to a burst sample with accurate location and find that the mean

value of the systematic error of GECAM-B localization is $\sim 2.5^{\circ}$. By

considering this systematic error, we can obtain a reliable localization

probability map for GECAM bursts. Our methods can be applied to other gamma-ray

monitors.

Estimating effective wind speed from Gemini Planet Imager's adaptive optics data using covariance maps by Daniel M. Levinstein et al. on Wednesday 30 November

The Earth's turbulent atmosphere results in speckled and blurred images of

astronomical objects when observed by ground based visible and near-infrared

telescopes. Adaptive optics (AO) systems are employed to reduce these

atmospheric effects by using wavefront sensors (WFS) and deformable mirrors.

Some AO systems are not fast enough to correct for strong, fast, high

turbulence wind layers leading to the wind butterfly effect, or wind-driven

halo, reducing contrast capabilities in coronagraphic images. Estimating the

effective wind speed of the atmosphere allows us to calculate the atmospheric

coherence time. This is not only an important parameter to understand for site

characterization but could be used to help remove the wind butterfly in post

processing. Here we present a method for estimating the atmospheric effective

wind speed from spatio-temporal covariance maps generated from pseudo open-loop

(POL) WFS data. POL WFS data is used as it aims to reconstruct the full

wavefront information when operating in closed-loop. The covariance maps show

how different atmospheric turbulent layers traverse the telescope. Our method

successfully recovered the effective wind speed from simulated WFS data

generated with the soapy python library. The simulated atmospheric turbulence

profiles consist of two turbulent layers of ranging strengths and velocities.

The method has also been applied to Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) AO WFS data.

This gives insight into how the effective wind speed can affect the wind-driven

halo seen in the AO image point spread function. In this paper, we will present

results from simulated and GPI WFS data.
