The story takes place during September 1930 where a group of wary explorers find themselves in disastrous conditions during an expedition in Antarctica. Told from the perspective of Dr. William Dyer, the tale is reflective of Lovecraft’s fascination with the Antarctic continent and his unfulfilled desire for exploration.
