In April 2003, Ruth and Chris Baker went to Romania, to spend a couple of weeks helping at an orphanage. They believed that it would be a one-off trip - but - in their own words, God had other plans for them - and those plans involved Ruth and Chris buying a home in North East Romania and devoting their lives to Hands of Hope - a charity registered in the Isle of Man and in Romania, where they live alongside vulnerable and disadvantaged people, and where they work in the community, offering one-to-one education, befriending families, distributing aid, and giving all kinds of practical help.
On the programme today, Chris and Ruth - back on the Isle of Man to celebrate Christmas and New Year with family and friends - talk not only about their 20-year relationship with Romania, but also about their more recent involvement in Ukraine. Their Romanian community is close to the Romanian/Ukraine border, which places them in an ideal position to make regular trips across that border, taking specific items of aid to community groups, churches and doctors with whom they have established direct contact.
There's also a hint of how they might celebrate the 20th anniversary of the charity in April 2023 - with a special appeal for funds to further develop their community centre, to extend the teaching support they offer to children in the area.
