ATL in Action: Interpreting Data in the PYP

Listen Later

In a PYP classroom, “Interpret Data” goes far beyond numbers—it's about helping students notice patterns, make meaning, and ask questions from information they gather or see.

In Early Years or Grade 1, students might draw pictures of their pets. By simply displaying and discussing these drawings, they begin visualizing data, identifying the most or least common, and learning to observe with purpose.

As they grow, in Grades 3 and 4, students move into more formal methods—like conducting surveys on how classmates travel to school, organizing results into tally charts, and converting them into bar graphs. They begin asking:

🔍 What’s most common?

🤔 Why is that?

🔮 What might change next year?

These questions spark critical thinking, prediction, and real-world connection, turning a simple math activity into an inquiry-rich learning experience. Students aren’t just collecting information—they’re learning how to use it to understand their world better.

In every grade, this skill connects math, language, and social understanding—proving that even a basic graph can become a powerful transdisciplinary learning moment.
