Atlascopcosaurus - The story of how a dinosaur was named after an industrial company
Back in the 1980s, married paleontologists Tom Rich and Patricia Vickers-Rich went on a big hunt for dinosaur remains in Australia. Atlas Copco decided to help out, lending them crucial excavation tools. The search was eventually successful, and a previously unknown species of a dinosaur was discovered in what was later to be named Dinosaur Cove in Victoria on Australia’s southern tip. As a gesture of thank you to the the company that lent the equipment, the dinosaur was named Atlascopcosaurus loadsi. The "loadsi" honors William Loads, Atlas Copco’s Southern Regional Manager of Australia at the time. In this interview, recorded in October 2015, Tom Rich and Patricia Vickers-Rich tell their story on how the dig came about. Enjoy!
