Listen Later

The 10th episode of Across The Park extra see’s club legend and ex captain David Weir join the lads in the studio to discuss the timeline of his Everton career. David re-visits the time he almost signed for Liverpool before joining the blues in February 1999 for a bargain fee of £250k. His first 3 months at the club was full of stories; from Marco Matterazzi crying on the touchline, playing centre midfield at Blackburn alongside Unsworth and  the impact Kevin Campbell & Scott Gemmill’s signings on deadline day. David’s first Anfield derby seen him part of (still the last) a derby victory at Anfield and he discusses his pride at being part of that side. Nick Barmby’s controversial move is discussed as David gives his thoughts on the controversy surrounding it, before moving on to the arrival of Paul Gascoigne and what that did for that dressing room. David look’s back fondly at his pairing with Michael Ball and later Alan Stubbs, as well as his determination to keep new signings from Joseph Yobo, Matteo Ferrari and Per Kroldrup from taking his place. We discuss the decision the club made to part company with Walter Smith and his feeling of guilt around it, before the progression of the club both on and off the pitch under David Moyes. Weir tell’s us how we knew Wayne Rooney was a star before he kicked a first team ball and talks about his feelings on the sale of Rooney to Manchester Utd in 2004, before telling us how a revitalised 2004-2005 team spirit led the blues all the way to a 4th place finish. We leave no stone unturned as we discuss who David Moyes had his moments with on the playing staff, his gratitude for Moyes offering him the chance to prolong his Everton career and his realisation that his EFC career was almost over when Joleon Lescott arrived in 2006. We touch on David’s time at Glasgow Rangers including a hilarious story of when he came face to face with Thomas Gravesen in the Old firm derby. The return to Everton in 2012, the application for the managers role when David Moyes left in 2013 and his subsequent move into football management is all discussed in this must listen show!
