Message Notes • Jeremy Klein (Senior Minister) • August 29, 2021
Series: F.I.T. “Faith in Training”
Message: Resistance Training
James 1:13-18
DEFINITIONS
Trial: a NATURAL unpleasant experience
Test: a DEVINE challenge from God
Temptation: a SATANIC enticement to sin
HOW TO RESIST TEMPTATION
· Understand the SOURCE
James 1:13-14 13 No one undergoing a trial should say, “I am being tempted by God,” since God is not tempted by evil, and he himself doesn’t tempt anyone. 14 But each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desire.
Proverbs 19:3 3 We are ruined by our own stupidity, though we blame the Lord. (CEV)
The problem is not our external CIRCUMSTANCES ,
but our internal DESIRES
· Visualize the CONSEQUENCES
James 1:14-15 14 But each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desire. 15 Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death.
“drawn away”: to DRAW animals in for the KILL
“enticed”: a LURE that looks good on the outside,
but there’s a HOOK on the inside
1 Peter 5:8-9 8 Be sober-minded, be alert. Your adversary the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour. 9 Resist him, firm in the faith, knowing that the same kind of sufferings are being experienced by your fellow believers throughout the world.
HOW TO RESIST TEMPTATION (CONTINUED)
· SEE yourself as God SEES you
James 1:16-18 16 Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. 18 By his own choice, he gave us birth by the word of truth so that we would be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
Proverbs 3:9 9 Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; (NIV)
