God is planning a wedding! The Lamb will marry his followers! Yeah, sounds weird. It's a freaking metaphor. Marriage is about union. So this metaphor is about a union of Jesus and his followers. And it's about a union between heaven and earth.
This is a vision of God finally putting things back together again. It ends in a garden city and you know what other story is set in a garden? The very first story in the Bible, the Garden of Eden. Okay, great. That happens one day, what do we do in the meantime? This whole book by John has been one great invitation to live like the Lamb - love, grace, healing, forgiveness. Work towards helping this place become more like heaven. What we do now matters.
Over the centuries, the church has been at the forefront of a lot of good work to make this place more like heaven. Social programs, free healthcare, shelter for marginalized folks, efforts to enact better protections for minors and other vulnerable people. Let's go back to that work as our focus. The church can and should be involved in that work, with all hands on deck.
