If you want to make it far in life, you have to rely on other people to help you. If you tried to do everything on your own, you would fail, but if you do move up the ladder and don’t forget who helped you along the way, If you do forget, then there will be feelings of resentment and those people will stop helping you. So give credit where it's due and keep your ego in check. You're successful already and don't need the validation of everyone else except yourself to know you did a good job. 

Also if the person gets an opportunity somewhere else, don't be afraid of letting them go. You will be known as a good boss and people will want to come work for you and you'll have the pick of your next protege who can help you take it to another level.
